Caregiving is a full-time job but many people are also working another full time job while caring for an older adult. There are a variety of tools out there to help you manage your current job while you are a caregiver.
AARP’s Caregiving While Working article reviews key tips and tools for talking with human resources, your manager, and understanding the benefits available to you as an employee and caregiver.
Make sure to reach out to your employer to ask about any Employee Assistance Plans (EAPs). EAPs may provide you with additional resources, such as legal assistance, family mediation and reduced cost care options.
Additionally, your time away from work caring for an older adult may be covered by the Family Medical Leave Act. The Department of Labor’s Family Medical Leave Act page outlines the conditions that qualify for paid leave and provides additional guides on how to access this benefit.
